The rating of the Chernobyl series, which is currently on the American HBO channel, has already exceeded the figures of the sensational Game of Thrones. Such enormous popularity should definitely be used in order to attract tourists from all over the world to our country. And this, respectively, and additional financial flows into the economy.
About this in an interview with the publication “Ekonomichchna Pravda” told MP and the head of the subcommittee of the Verkhovna Rada on tourism, resorts and recreation, Anna Romanova.
According to her, the number of people willing to visit the Chernobyl exclusion zone in recent years has been increasing: about 70 thousand visitors last year, which is almost ten times more than four years ago. Most of them are foreigners.
“Unfortunately, most of them travel thousands of kilometers only to visit the exclusion zone, and they have no idea what else you can see in Ukraine. Therefore, Ukraine does not receive “tourist investments”, which could be earned with a comprehensive tourism product, including not only visiting Chernobyl, ”notes Anna Romanova. In this regard, in her opinion, the state should create all the necessary infrastructure and eliminate other bureaucratic factors that impede visits to both the Chernobyl zone and Ukraine as a whole.
Representatives of the tourist industry say that there is a rational grain in the arguments of Ms. Romanova. The executive director of the Albatros-Trevel Group of Companies Dmitry Tantsyura recalled that cinema has always been a powerful incentive for tourism. In this regard, we can recall not only textbook examples with the same “Game of Thrones” or “Lord of the Rings”, to the places where the pilgrimage of fans from around the world does not stop. Many years ago, a sharp increase in the number of visitors was observed in Kiev – after several large companies made their commercials here.
Director of “CHERNOBYL-TOUR” Yaroslav Emelianenko, in turn, notes that the number of people willing to visit Chernobyl in his company is really growing at a hurricane rate – the employees are already struggling to cope with all applications.
As for the popularization of other regions of Ukraine, here, according to the interlocutors, not everything is so simple. Because it is not enough to attract a foreign tourist to the Chernobyl zone – we must also make sure that he wants to go to other cities of Ukraine.
